Netflix announced on October 28th the launch of “Moments” a new feature for those who watch its movies and series from their smartphones, coming to both iOS and Android devices.

So what’s Moments about? Basically it allows you to bookmark certain scenes from your favorite movies and shows within the Netflix app, but also to share those scenes via social media. Sort of a video meme generator without the extra video editing.

There’s a difference though between the iOS and Android launch. The iOS Netflix app already added the Moments feature, however the Android app will have to wait for a bit longer. Maybe they’re having trouble with those new 20 tester rules :).

So how does it work? Basically all you have to do is tap on the Moments icon at the bottom of your Netflix video player, and the scene will automatically be saved to your My Netflix tab. The saved scenes will allow you to start your favorite movie/show directly at that particular time in the movie.

Furthermore, you’ll be able to share the saved Moments to your Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Whatsapp and other social networks.

Now, here’s what I find odd about this new feature. Historically, Netflix and other streaming companies always sent DMCAs to users that uploaded scenes from their movies/shows to social media to take those down. However now they’re the ones encouraging that. Until the Android version is out I won’t know for sure, but I have a feeling that you’ll be able to share the scenes only for Netflix created movies and shows, not for every show.
